The Elgar Connection

Paul Henley's mother, Margaret knew Elgar's daughter, Carice (pictured left). They both attended the meetings of the Women's Institute in the village hall at Rushwick, near Worcester, Margaret's childhood home and near Elgar's birthplace at Broadheath. As a young girl she remembered seeing Elgar walking the streets of Worcester as an old man. Paul himself is from Worcester and this background and connection has been a motivation for him in his writing.

Bethlehem Junction was written by Paul Henley in 1987 and received its first perfomance that year. It was revived in 2014 and this family show is returning this December and being staged in Ludlow, Shropshire. Written for vocal soloists, chorus and orchestra and with a considerable dance element, it is a more or less contemporary depiction of the traditional Christmas events. The musical style is diverse - contemporary, yet both up tempo and melodic. The familiar (and some less familiar) characters are there, telling of an extraordinary and miraculous event.

From the review of the original production staged in December 1987
(Review by Angela Goodall, 'Words and Music')

".....it was very compelling, often beautiful music, superbly sung."

"There were some memorable items. 'He will be great', sung by Fiammetta Doria (Angel) and reprised as 'Glory to God' was quite thrilling with the chorus.

'Fly a Dream' was beautifully sung by Helen Kucharek (Mary)."

"There was a powerful climax with 'For Once in a While' sung by Bruce Rankin as Joseph."

".....later there was a wonderful trio for City Gents 'Hot from Holborn'....."

"This was a marvellous evening with singers of national reputation."
